Once in a Decade...

While visiting the small Kingham church a few days ago, a woman there told us about another nearby church, St Peter's Church in Daylesford. It sits on the site of a monastery dating to 820 and parts of the actual church itself date back more than ten centuries. The primary building was completed in 1816-1818 by Warren Hastings- quite a famous man in British history. Hastings is in fact buried on the site. The church was designed by one of the foremost English church architects J.L. Pearson.

The church was closed in 2001 and it was open today for the first time in ten years for tours and in hopes of raising funds to restore the building. Here are a few photos of this beautiful old building....

Carving detail on the front of the pulpit.

We didn't set out to chase old churches across England, but have enjoyed stumbling into three different ones in the past week or so. Each is unique and provides a living link with fellow believers dating back nearly two thirds of the way to Jesus himself.

Wow - what a beautiful church! The detail involved is stunning, particularly when you recall that every bit of this was done by hand, one painstaking element at a time. Then when you pause to consider just how many prayers were offered up over so many hundreds and hundreds of years - mind-boggling! Thanks for sharing your adventures and letting us be a part of them.
